Town Manager Dennis Finlay and Fire Chief Bob Seltzer were among the guests who visited the staff room at the Smithfield Fire Department to celebrate the retirement of Capt. Leonard "Pepper" Anthony after 25 years of service.

Anthony explained that the nickname "Pepper" — which adorned the large chocolate-and-vanilla sheet cake prepared for the event — was something given to him "before I could walk, and it just stuck," adding he's not sure who originally started it.

The accompanying video [running time: 1:48] shows scenes from the Nov. 29 afternoon gathering, including a visit from friends and family.
