A recount of the Nov. 6 election results gave Republican Sean Clough a six-vote edge to secure the second available seat.
Following two years with a slim Democratic majority, the Smithfield School Committee switched back to 3-2 Republican control following the recount of the Nov. 6 election. According to the Rhode Island Secretary of State website, Republican Sean Clough edged out Democratic candidate Ronald Riley Jr. by just six votes, 4384 to 4376, for the second of two open seats. Republican Kellie-Ann Heenan finished first overall with 4,401 votes in the five-way race, while Vice Chairwoman Joan LaFauci lost the seat she'd held for 12 years. Since state election officials completed the recount on Tuesday, Nov. 20, the newly-elected members were not able to participate in the school committee meeting the night before, the Valley Breeze reported. When the next Rhode Island House of Representatives session opens in January, Smithfield's delegation will represent the spectrum of experience, with one new member and a 10-term incumbent. Thomas Winfield (D-Dist. 53) who secured an eleventh term 20 years and three days after his first election, said that he felt "very comfortable, as I always am" during an interview at Smithfield High School at about 5 pm on Tuesday. "I wouldn't get in a race that I didn't think I could win," explained Winfield, who is president of Anderson-Winfield Funeral Homes and Anderson-Winfield Chauffeured Services. Just a few hundred feet away at Anna McCabe School, Gregory Costantino was looking to drum up a few more votes in his second run for the House Dist…

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.
It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …
