East Smithfield Public Library Announces October Events

 

 

STORYHOURS - Tuesdays from 10:15-11:00 a.m. and Thursdays from 1:00-1:45 p.m. The morning story hours, for children 31/2-6 years old, will be held on November 5, 12, 19, and 26. The afternoon story hours will be held on November 7, 14, and 21. As usual, there will be enjoyable stories and crafts. Pre-registration for November's story hours will begin on October 15 and run through the end of October. Registration is required.

SATURDAY SPECIALS: October 5, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Lego Club - Stop by the library on Saturday and join other lego enthusiasts for a lego good time. The library will supply the legos and you can share your ideas, techniques, and creations with your friends and other club members. This program is for children ages 4-12. Drop in anytime from 11:00-12:30.

October 26, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Halloween Fun @ the Library!. This program, for children ages 5-10. Come to the library for a “not too scary” afternoon at the library. Costumes are welcome! Please register for this program by calling the library at 231-5150 x3 or by stopping by the Children’s Room.

 

TODDLER STORY HOURS – The library provides a toddler story time program for children ages 2 to 3 ½ on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. A parent/caregiver must participate in the program. Registration is required.

 

FRIDAY IS GAME DAY AT THE LIBRARY! From 2:00 – 4:30 p.m. Come play a board game, enjoy a snack, bring a friend or make a new friend. See you there!

 

 

COUNTING CONTEST - All of our younger patrons in grades K-5 are invited to participate in our Halloween Counting Contest - counting the number of candy corns in a special container. Stop by the Children’s Room and place your guess in the box provided and you could be a winner! The youngster who comes the closest to the correct number will win a spooktacular Halloween treat! The winner will be drawn on Thursday, October 31. Each child is allowed ONLY ONE GUESS. Good luck to all of the participants.

 

DISPLAY – This month the Children’s Room display is featuring Spencer Alberg’s Volkswagen Collection. Spencer is 6 years old. He loves all kinds of cars but one of his favorites is the Volkswagen! Spencer began collecting them when his mom gave him the medium yellow VW Beetle. Spencer’s favorite is the bright green VW Bus that he put together himself! Spencer also enjoys riding in his grandfather’s Volkswagens and watching Herbie the Love Bug movies.

 

STAR WARS DISPLAY – These are the droids you are looking for! Go you must, to the library. It is an exhibit that will be long remembered. This Lego Star Wars exhibit features your most favorite characters and the fastest ships in the galaxy. The collection spans both the classic and more recent trilogy. Impressive! Most impressive! The display was organized by Mr. Mike and his wife Mrs. Lisa.

 

STAR WARS READS AND GET-TOGETHER – Join us and readers all across the galaxy for Star Wars Reads. Stop by the library and take home a Star Wars activity kit. For the entire month of October, a Star Wars Lego Display will be featured in the main display case. Star Wars Reads is a national event that celebrates reading and Star Wars. On Tuesday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. the library will be hosting a Star Wars reads get-together.There will be Star Wars games and activities including Lego Star Wars the Game! Did you know that the library has over 150 different Star Wars items in its collection! May the Force be with you.

 

SHARE-A-STORY BOOK GROUP – Thursday, October 24, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Miss Babs invites 4th and 5th grade children and their parent/caregiver to meet monthly to discuss a book they have read together. The meeting this month is an information and organizational meeting where we will discuss how the group works and choose our meeting dates for the school year. Stop by the library and find out how you can join in the fun!

 

NIGHT OUT @ THE LIBRARY – Thursday, October 17, @ 6:30 p.m. Are you a tween/teen who would like to join a fun club at the library? Come to the first meeting of the minds with Miss Babs when we will put our heads together to brainstorm about what you would like this new club to be all about. Bring ideas and an open mind! Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library. This is a drop in program; no registration is necessary.

 

HOMEWORK EXPRESS – The Homework Express is continuing at the East Smithfield Public Library. For youngsters in grades K-8, this is the ticket for you. Each Thursday, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., Miss Babs will be ready to help you with your homework. Whether you need help finding a specific book, guidance with a tricky question, or just some advice on how to get started, Miss Babs will give you the encouragement and confidence you need to tackle any homework assignment. Don’t hesitate to avail yourself to this warm, friendly, and professional service. Drop by the library (no sign-up necessary) and get rolling on the Homework Express! Hope to see you soon.

 

 

 

TEEN READ WEEK – Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as the East Smithfield Public Library celebrates Teen Read Week, October 13-19. This year’s theme is “Seek the Unknown @ Your Library!” Teen Read Week is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week encourages teens to read a wide variety of materials that are out of this world such as sci-fi, fantasy, virtual realities, graphic novels, and much more.

ART IN THE AFTERNOON – Starting Wednesday, October 9, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Art in the Afternoon returns to East Smithfield Public Library this fall, and invites children in grades 2 through 5 to enjoy a free literature-based art program. We will be using many different methods and materials in the creation of various art projects and crafts. Join us for some fun as we explore projection and technological art. Simply call 231-5150 x3 to register, or just drop by!

 

 

 

POWERPOINT BASICS – Wednesday, October 16, @ 5:30 p.m. Learn the basics of PowerPoint. This workshop covers how to add graphics and text and make a slide show, or professional–looking presentation. You can use it for work or your own slideshow(s). The workshop is designed for those who have never used PowerPoint and it will mainly concentrate on the practical activities of this particular software. Prerequisite knowledge of using computers with a mouse will be helpful. Registration is required.

 

EXCEL BASICS AND SPREADSHEETS – Wednesday, October 23, @ 5:30 p.m. Learn the basics of using Microsoft Excel. This workshop covers the Excel environment, simple formulas, and charts. The workshop is designed for those who have never used Excel and it will mainly concentrate on practical activities such as setting up a budget. Prerequisite knowledge of using computers with a mouse will be helpful. Registration is required.

 

EXCEL PART II – Wednesday, October 30, @ 5:30 p.m. This class is for those with a basic knowledge of Excel and want to learn more. Learn about sorting data, using forms, helpful functions, and other worksheet skills. Prerequisite knowledge of Excel Basics is recommended. Space is limited and registration is required.

 

YOUNG ADULTS GENEALOGY WORKSHOP: SEEK THE UNKNOWN ABOUT YOUR PAST – Tuesday, October 15 @ 6:00 p.m. Those in middle school and high school are invited to participate in this program where you will learn how to search your family history using the Census, Family Search, Heritage Quest, and other databases devoted to genealogy in Rhode Island and other parts of the world. Due to limited seating, registration is required. To register, call 231-5150.

 

 

HOMEWORK HELP – Need help on your school assignments, projects and papers? If so, stop by the library on any Monday (3-8 p.m.), Tuesday (3-8 p.m.), or Wednesday (3-7 p.m.) and Mr. Mike will assist you in utilizing the best reference resources for your homework. You will learn how to find the most useful books and how to use the electronic resources and Internet to get the most current articles on topics you are researching. Learn how to properly cite articles and organize your resources into a cohesive report. No registration is required. To access homework help from home, go to the library’s homepage and click on the Young Adult (Y/A) Teen Page, and under Reference, click on either the Online Reference Homework Help or Schoolwork and Research/EBSCO Databases link. ASKRI.ORG – Online resources are available to all Rhode Islanders from their favorite library, or wherever they connect to the Internet. All you need is a library card. These core resources include Tutor.com, World Book and World Book Discover, and a selection of EBSCO databases including Academic Search Premier, Master File Premier, History Reference Center and many more. LOTION BAR WORKSHOP – Monday, October 21, from 6:45-8:00 p.m. Learn how to make your own solid lotions! Lotion bars last longer than conventional lotion and are deeply moisturizing just in time for the cool weather temperatures. Using organic and natural ingredients, you will formulate your own lotion bar at home! Instructor: soap maker and herbalist Liz Smith. There is a class fee of $5.00. Please register.

 

BEGINNER’S LEVEL HATHA YOGA CLASSES – Mondays, October 7, 21, and 28, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. This 3-week session will focus on “Finding the Quiet Within.” The instructor for this program is Barbara Fetta. You may sign up for 1 class on a space-available basis ($12.00) or the entire session (3 classes for $36.00). Registration is required.

 

THURSDAY NIGHT BOOK CLUB – The group will meet on Thursday, October 24, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the library. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman will be discussed this month. Please call 231-5150, or stop in, to reserve your spot. For additional information, contact Bethany Mott at the library.
