The Smithfield Fire Department is out on local streets passing the boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association this week.
The MDA is dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases through research, fundraising and community advocacy.
On Monday, firefighters parked an engine in the median at the entrance to the Crossing at Smithfield shopping plaza, and four men spread out, boots in hand, to collect for the MDA. Last year, Smithfield firefighters collected about $8,000 for the MDA, said Smithfield Firefighter Steve Carberry, Chairman of the MDA boot drive.
Carberry said firefighters will be out all week around town, taking donations in between fire calls.
