Gas Prices Surge; Are you Driving Less?

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline has jumped 21 cents this month

Gas prices in Smithfield continue an upward march, with prices up 21 cents in February.

AAA Southern New England said its survey of prices in Rhode Island Feb. 11 found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $3.749 per gallon, eight cents higher than last week. Prices locally are 21 cents higher than a month ago. The current price is 16 cents above the national average for regular unleaded of $3.58. A year ago at this time Rhode Island’s average price was $3.64.

On Tuesday, the least expensive gallon of gas on Monday was being sold at Smithfield Mobile at 354 Putnam Pike.

AAA offers a new gas saving tip each week with its gas price updates. This week, the AAA suggests drivers accelerate smoothly and brake gradually - it’s safer, uses less gas and reduces brake wear.
