The North Central Chamber of Commerce is hosting a "speed networking" event tomorrow morning at Goodwill Industries.

In a twist on the modern "speed date" trend, the North Central Chamber of Commerce is hosting a "speed networking" event tomorrow morning at Goodwill Industries in Providence.

Chamber President Deb Ramos explained the concept in a recent email message.

"It’s a relaxed atmosphere, but forces the attendees to meet each other and offers them quality one-on-one time," Ramos wrote. "Seating is so that you network with the person across from you. Every few minutes the group rotates the table(s), creating the opportunity for each person to sit across from a different person every rotation."

This will be the latest in a series of speed networking events that the Chamber — which covers Smithfield, Johnston, North Providence, Scituate, Foster and Glocester — has been holding quarterly. Ramos also credited Goodwill Industries with providing the space and supporting tomorrow's meeting.

"Goodwill is great to work with — they truly do help their local community in every aspect," Ramos explained.  "I do believe they see the advantage to being a North Central Chamber member and utilizing the Chamber to help them make connections, as well."

Asked for the top benefits to businesses who participate in the free event, Ramos replied: "Visibility, education and growth — they make themselves and/or their company visible in the business community; have the opportunity to get educated on what their fellow members/community people do and vice versa; and grow their business through growing their contacts."

And even in the current atmosphere of online-communication and virtual advertising, Ramos noted there's still a need for local businesspeople to meet face-to-face.

"One-on-one time is the best in every aspect of our lives — networking is no different," Ramos wrote. "This is also what I like to do as Chamber President, is meet and talk with our Chamber members, local businesses, and chamber and prospects so I can learn about them, their business, their struggles AND their successes."

The event is scheduled for 7:30 to 9 am at Goodwill Industries, 100 Houghton St., Providence. Sign up using the Chamber of Commerce website or by calling (401) 349-4674.
