In advance of this weekend's 25th Annual Apple Festival, North Central Chamber of Commerce President and Festival Chairman Lou Mansolillo started their preparations last week, marking out vendor spaces and getting Johnston Memorial Park ready for the two-day event.
Nearly 90 vendors — including many Smithfield businesses — will be on hand during the Festival.
This year's Festival is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, from 10 am to 8 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 6 pm on Sunday.
Both days will feature nearly 90 vendors, music on the park's main stage, and activities for all ages.
New to the Apple Festival this year is a cupcake competition to be held on Saturday, featuring several bakeries from the local area.
In a twist to previous "best apple pie" contests, past winners will compete for the title of "Best of the Best" on Saturday.
On Saturday night, a live band will play on the park's island on Pocasset Pond, and local Boy Scouts will set up campfires around the pond at dusk.
