Friends and Family Fete 'Pepper' [VIDEO]

Local officials, longtime colleagues and family members — including a new grandson — celebrated the retirement of Capt. Leonard Anthony from the Smithfield Fire Department on Nov. 29.

Town Manager Dennis Finlay and Fire Chief Bob Seltzer were among the guests who visited the staff room at the Smithfield Fire Department to celebrate the retirement of Capt. Leonard "Pepper" Anthony after 25 years of service.

Anthony explained that the nickname "Pepper" — which adorned the large chocolate-and-vanilla sheet cake prepared for the event — was something given to him "before I could walk, and it just stuck," adding he's not sure who originally started it.
