Smithfield Police Snag Sneaker Stealing Sisters

The following information was provided by the Smithfield Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Twin sisters from Providence weren't sneaky enough while shoplifting several pairs of sneakers from Famous Footwear at Smithfield Crossings March 21, drawing the attention of store clerks and police.

Store clerks reported that a group of five women had entered the store, and two had begun asking the staff questions while the others went further into the store. One of them began putting sneakers into a shopping bag. When approached by staff, the women left the store, each in a different direction, according to police reports.

Smithfield Police Officer Jeffrey Scott responded to the business at about 4:34 p.m. to assist another officer who had detained Keiwonda Jones, 36, of 27 Knowles St., Providence, a suspect in the reported thefts, according to his report.

Keiwonda advised the officers she was at the store with her twin sister, Keyalonda Jones, 36, of the same address.

At 5:50 p.m., Scott spotted Keyalonda exiting the area holding an open top shopping bag. She entered a flower shop, then exited and went into the woods nearby before returning, after which Scott caught up to her.

Scott questioned her about the bag she was carrying, and observed it contained a new pair of men's sneakers, which Keyalonda claimed were hers. He escorted the woman to his cruiser, noticing that she also appeared to be carrying sneakers under her coat. When asked to unzip her coat, officers discovered she was carrying three additonal pairs of sneakers inside it. Altogether, the sneakers were worth $206.97.

Both sisters were arrested. Keiawonda, who was carrying 5 grams of crack cocaine worth $20, was charged with two counts of shoplifting, conspiracy, and possession of illegal drugs, all felonies.

Keyalonda was charged with two counts of shoplifting and conspiracy, all felonies. There was also an outstanding warrant for her arrest for failing to appear on a previous charge.
