Smithfield Police Taser Man Arrested for DUI, Ripping Sink off Station Wall

The folllowing arrest information was provided by the Smithfield Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

 

A New Jersey man already having a bad day after driving his car into a tree on Rte. 44 April 24 and being arrested for DUI ripped a sink off a wall at the police station, getting tasered for his trouble.

Smithfield Police responded to Putnam Pike at the corner of Crestview Drive for a report of a car into a tree at about 8:51 p.m. They found Hemant Trivedi, 21, of 921 Gates Ave., Piscataway, NJ, the driver of a gray 2005 Toyota Prius, had lost control of the vehicle.

The responding officer noted Trivedi had bloodshot eyes and slurred his speech. Trivedi subesquently failed routine sobriety tests, and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. His car was towed away by Willy's Towing.

At Smithfield Police headquarters, Trivedi consented to a breathalyzer test, but after, he stood up from his chair, walked over to a sink and tore it from the wall, breaking the pipes attaching it.

Smithfield Police officers responded to this impromptu feat of strength by tasering Trivedi, subduing him. Once subdued, Trivedi had to be taken to Fatima Hospital to have the taser barbs removed from his person, said Smithfield Police Captain Michael Rheaume. 

Trivedi was treated at the hospital and released back into the custody of Smithfield Police, who transported him back to the station without further incident.

Trivedi was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, .15, first offense, driving after denial of his license, vandalism, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
