State Surveying Cortland Place After Oct. 23 Complaint Inspection

Nursing home Cortland Place remains under a RI Department of Health ban against taking new residents after agency inspectors found evidence that they "failed to protect a resident from neglect".

A disciplinary order leveling the ban was hand-delivered to director David Jasinski Oct. 26. 

The order came after an Oct. 23 "abbreviated complaint inspection" to determine if the facility was in line with state and federal regulations, according to a copy of the document provided by the Health Department.

During the inspection, "Preliminary evidence gathered by inspectors indicates the facility failed to protect a resident from neglect and failed to investigate and/or report to the department as required."

Dara Chadwick, Chief Officer of Health Promotion at the Department of Health, said a survey the 20 Austin Ave. facility is under way. According to the order, the site, a special focus facility for the Medicaid and Medicare program, was already under scrutiny for substandard care.

The facility, located on an 8.5 acre lot, provides independent & assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation, and Alzheimer's and Dementia Care, according to its website.

While the facility can't accept new residents, existing residents receiving hospital care may be allowed to return to Cortland Place with the permission of the Health Department.

Copies of the order were also sent to RI Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, the RI State Medicaid Agency and the Board of Nursing Home Administrators.
