Smithfield School Calendar Adds Jewish, Hindu, Muslim Holidays

The school committee approved the revised calendar on Monday night.

 

Observances in the Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu religions have been added to the official Smithfield School Department calendar for the current school year.

The Valley Breeze reported this week that the local school board approved the updates at its Oct. 1 meeting.

Among the new holidays noted on the calendar are:

  • Eid Al-Adha, a Muslim commemoration of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son, celebrated on Oct. 26;
  • Diwali, a Hindu celebration known as the "Festival of Lights";
  • Lunar New Year, which takes place on Feb. 10, 2013.
