Three Smithfield High School Teams Undefeated So Far

Through more than half of their respective seasons, the boys' tennis and lacrosse squads, and the girls' track team are undefeated.

Three Smithfield High School athletic teams remain undefeated in league play, with more than half of the spring schedule concluded.

- As usual, the Sentinels are fielding a strong tennis squad. Smithfield is 7-0 in Division I-Met B play, 3.5 games ahead of second place Barrington (3-3) and four games ahead of North Kingstown (3-4).

The Sentinels host Ponaganset (0-6 Division I-Met B) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Smithfield has traditionally been one of the better tennis programs in the state. After years of success in Class B and Division II – second place finishes in 2002, 2005 and 2010 – the Sentinels were moved up to Division I.

The Sentinels last won a team title in 1996, capping off a run of three straight Class C titles. Dating back to 2001, Smithfield has only had a single losing season, and even that was a still-good 6-7 mark in 2006.

- Likewise, Smithfield has another strong Division III boys’ lacrosse team. The Sentinels are 7-0 and atop Division III, a half-game ahead of the 6-1 squad in second place – Cranston West, Coventry and Lincoln.

Smithfield hosts Cranston West at 4 p.m. today at Deerfield Park.

The Sentinels first fielded a boys’ lacrosse team in 2007. After four sub-.500 years, Smithfield has taken back-to-back Division III titles in 2011 and 2012, and appear to be in line for a third straight this year.

- The Smithfield girls’ track team has also started with a strong 8-0 record in the Northern Division. The team was scheduled to compete on Tuesday afternoon against Scituate (1-7), Lincoln (6-1) and Ponaganset (6-1).

However, this is probably no surprise to followers of the program. In the past 10 years of competition, the Sentinels have just two regular season losses.

Smithfield won eight straight Class C championships, from 2002 to 2009, but were shutout from the class and division championships in 2012.
