Councilman Bernard Hawkins successfully lobbied for town council support of legislation to be sought from the Rhode Island General Assembly.
Smithfield town staffers would oversee the maintenance of school grounds under a bill requested by Councilman Bernard Hawkins and approved by a 3-1 vote by the council on June 4. Council President Alberto LaGreca Jr. voted against the plan, which requires General Assembly approval, the Valley Breeze reported. Hawkins said he saw his proposal as a way to provide more funding to the school department by relieving it of the cost for upkeep of school properties. The Breeze also reported that, at the same session, Councilwoman Suzanna Alba tried to get council approval for a plan to move one of the council's two monthly meetings to the Smithfield Senior Center. Alba's move failed with a 2-2 deadlock, according to the Breeze.
