Smithfield Police Arrest Man for Assault on Wife at Bus Stop

The following arrest information was provided by the Smithfield Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On Friday, May 10, at 12:51 p.m., Smithfield Police Officer Michael Proulx was called to the front of Alpine Motel at 485 Douglas Pike for a report of physical struggle. When he arrived, according to his report, he saw Derrick Pfeiler, 31, of 108 Underwood Ave., Warren, with a cane, walking away from a nearby bus stop, where a woman was sitting, crying. Proulx instructed Pfeiler to drop the cane and stop, and the man did so, seating himself on the grass nearby. He told Proulx he and his wife, who were estranged, had an arugment about money and he was walking away from the situation. He said the argument had not gotten physical. A witness at the scene contradicted that statement, saying Pfeiler had grabbed the woman and thrown her into a …

Gilmore was called to the Putnam Pike drug store May 7 at about 10 a.m. for a report from the store's loss prevention team that a pharmacy employee had stolen a small amount of erectile dysfunction pills. Gilmore met with the loss prevention team and Poholek in an office at the store, where the loss prevention employees said the Mansfield man had admitted to them he'd taken a small, undetermined amount of Viagra and Cialis pills. OMGPD: Hulked Out, Heroin and an Arsenal, Alleged Alibi

Take a look at some of the more compelling police reports from around the state. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Hulk Smash — Sink? Getting arrested can be an incredibly angering experience for some. For one New Jersey man, the rage that followed his arrest could be described as…Hulk-ish?  Smithfield police arrested a 21-year-old man on DUI charges after he had allegedly crashed his car into a tree. At the police station, the man took a Breathalyzer test, then allegedly stood up from his chair, walked over to the sink and tore it from the wall, breaking the pipes attaching it. Police were able to subdue the man/Hulk impersonator with a Taser. When Your Alibi Needs an Alibi This week’s best fake alibi goes to a Providence man accused of robbery. When police caught up to the man who allegedly stole $341 from Kattan’s Market in Cranston, he told them …

Council Grants Smithfield FD Request for Two New Positions

Town Councilors on Tuesday night approved Fire Chief Robert Selzter's request to pay for two new Emergency Management Technicians as part of a roughly $70 million budget plan.

Following Tuesday night's town council vote to approve $78,000 from the town and $25,000 from the fire department to fund two new EMT positions, Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said he was pleased at the decision. "That gives us what I was aiming for — I was trying to get two started this year, and that gives me money for 3/4 of the year because by the time we get them trained, three months will go by," Seltzer explained in a phone interview. "We had started off requesting four, and we ended up with two, but that's fine — we have an issue we need to address with the out-of-town rescues coming in and the very long times of waiting for them to arrive at scenes." Seltzer had previously explained that residents had to wait up to 15 …

Smithfield Town Council OKs $150K Extra for Schools, Pending Performance Evaluation

Entire additional $450,000 budgeted for schools in escrow pending department review.

Supt. Robert O'Brien walked into last night's Budget Hearing at Smithfield High School hoping for $300,000 added to the School Department's budget, but he got half — with a condition. Town Manager Dennis Finlay's $32,844,732 school budget appropriation had already added $300,000 in response to O'Brien's request to add $1.1 million to the budget, but the superintendent and School Committee Chairman Richard Iannitelli had hoped to convince the Council to add at least another $300,000 that they said would save 18 teaching jobs and add a full-time technology teacher and a half-time music teacher. But after about 20 minutes of deliberation, the Council denied the request for $300,000, then approved adding $150,000 to the budget, but …
