Smithfield Police Seek Public's Aid in Burglary Spree Investigation

As Smithfield Police pursue a Seekonk, MA lead in a local burglary spree, they're warning residents to be alert to ward off more break-ins and help catch the crooks.

Shortly after a break-in on Domin Avenue Aug. 1 between 3:30 and 4 p.m., the victim's credit card was used at a convenience store in Seekonk, MA. In a notice posted to the town's website, Smithfield Police identify the man as a potential suspect in several other recent break-ins.

Smithfield Police have responded to "numerous"  break-ins in the last three months in the Ridge Road, Stillwater Road and Douglas Pike (southeast) area of Georgiaville/Esmond, according to the notice.

On May 30, Smithfield Patch reported that Police responded to a Dillon Lane break-in and another on Pleasant View Avenue June 5.

On July 3, Police responded to two burglaries on Stillwater Road and one on Whipple Road, with about $700 in tools taken in the first two cases and $40,000 in jewelry taken in the latter.

Most recently, said Det. Captain Michael Rheaume, officers responded to a break-in on Deerhill Drive Aug. 30 at about 8 p.m. In that burglary, thieves broke into the home through a back door while the homeowner was away and took a small safe.

A neighbor alerted officers to the burglary, Rheaume said, calling to report a suspicious person prowling through their back yard. Officers arrived and chased two men wearing black through the woods near Rte. 7, but didn't catch them.

Officers found the safe Sept. 2, Rheaume said, but they are still looking for the men.

Rheaume said homeowners should take precautions if they are going on vacation or plan to be leaving their homes for any length of time. He suggested having someone check on unoccupied homes regularly and recommended using light timers to make homes appear occupied during an absence.

"Most breaking & enterings appear to have happened during the afternoon and early evening hours. Residents are asked to secure their residence, even if they are only leaving for a short period of time. Residents are also asked to report any suspicious persons or vehicles in their neighborhoods, to the Smithfield Police, as soon as possible," police advised on the town website.

Anyone with information on any of the burglaries may contact the Smithfield Police at 401-231-2500 or  the TIPS line at 401-233-1019, if they wish to remain anonymous.
